The purpose of Monticello Society is to:
- study the history, society, politics and culture of the USA
- work to enhance Norwegians’ knowledge and understanding of American affairs
- work against anti-Americanism, particularly in the Norwegian media
Monticello Society acknowledges the importance of the United States as a main influence for freedom and democracy in the world. Our purpose is to study and communicate these values in Norway. We arrange study groups, video sessions, election night parties, etc. We also work to correct factual errors and counter politicized rhetoric in local media.
Membership and organization
The only requirements for joining Monticello Society are the acceptance of our statement of purpose and the payment of an annual membership fee of NOK 200. This allows voting rights at the annual meeting and free access to all membership events. Monticello Society is a member of ACCN, the American Coordinating Council of Norway. We are non-partisan, both in the Norwegian and the American political contexts.
Recurring events:
We host an annual Reagan Conference on a Sunday (usually) in early February, where we discuss issues of historic and/or contemporary importance to the United States. We have had former Secretaries of State, former and sitting Members of Parliament, top career diplomats, economists, journalists and writers as speakers at these conferences.
In the first quarter of every year we have our annual meeting, where a new board is elected and new bylaws are adopted.
We usually arrange a barbecue for members in June or August.
In November during election years, we host election night parties with expert commentary and social events.
